Great Gray Owls ....
A work in progress, Photography by Kyle Krosting
Great Gray Owl have blessed Northern Minnesota and a rare opportunity to see these owls in
such great number. For the last several weeks I have spent every opportunity observing and
photographing this magnificent owl. Photographing these birds has been a cold challenging
experience. Finding a hot spot takes some time since I am not traveling far north where the birds
are found in great numbers. Sunrise seems to be the most rewarding during my travels. The first
time we ventured in search of the Great Gray Owl we pulled over on a back road looking at
what could have been an owl far in the field and to our surprise and his good fortune that I was
not moving at the time flew over the road, just ahead of the truck and perched on a fence pole .
Taken by such an encounter as we ready our camera to full zoom the owl left its perch. Thinking
It was taken to flight It instead did what I call a nose dive into the snow. I was so shocked as I
viewed this through my zoom lens I could not even take a picture. The days in the woods
viewing and photographing and learning have been amazing. The yellow of the eyes to the
silence of their flight every time I sight a Great Gray Owl is excited. Please preserve their peace
in the wild. These birds are our welcome guest. Photograph from your vehicle and keep your
distance to minimize stress to our guest.
